An Analytic Review of Literature on Employment and AAC

Abstract
The purposes of this study were two folds: (1) to review and analyze current research on employment and augmentative and alternative communication(AAC) users with disabilities and (2) to provide directions for research and practice. 16 research on AAC users from peer-reviewed journals, published in English between 1996 to 2007, were chosen for an analytic review. Those studies were divided into two categories: (1) descriptive and (2) intervention. Subcategory of descriptive research was employment experiences of AAC users and those of co-workers and employers who worked or currently work with AAC users. Intervention studies were analyzed with two subcategories, job preparation program and communication-based intervention. From the results of the analytic review, implications for practices and further research were discussed, including (1) needs of study to investigate diverse AAC users¡¯ needs and job-related experiences, (2) needs of instructions enhancing social integration and quality of communication based on an environmental analysis, and (3) needs of supports and training for communication partners. Furthermore, implications for using AAC at employment-related circumstances in Korea were discussed.
